Zoe's Tale Tor Books, May 2009 406 pages Cover art by John Harris. In Old Man's War, John Scalzi brought us a new future, vast in scope, amazingly advanced and yet horribly familiar at the same time. I'm going to be a little different and review these together. His latest novel, “Zoe's Tale”, which is set in his Old Man's War universe, is hip, cheeky, filled with humor and just downright entertaining. There's only one followup book, Zoe's Tale, and all it does is retell the events of The Last Colony from the perspective of Zoe. John Scalzi, Zoe's Tale, Tor, 2008. So it is with Zoe's Tale, which is a retelling of the story of The Last Colony (which missed winning this year's Hugo Award for Best Novel by a whisker) from the point of view of the protagonists' adopted daughter, Zoë. They are different books, but they have essentially the same overall plot seen through two different characters. The final novel in the Old Man's War series demonstrates just how brilliant a writer John Scalzi is. I ate up the Old Man's War trilogy last year like it was a friggin' breakfast burrito during a hangover. From what I understand, Zoe's Tale is a retelling of The Last Colony, the third book in his Old Man's War trilogy*. A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. What drove me nuts about this book was how perky it was. A player and a pawn in an interstellar chess match to save the human race. While I do keep an eye on his blog, this was my first John Scalzi novel. I did something I don't normally do and read a book from a series without having read the previous books. Zoe's Tale is the retelling of the events of “The Last Colony” through the eyes of the daughter of the main protagonists in the earlier novel.
